Komodo National Park, IndonesiaKomodo national park is one of the greatest dive destinations, and one of the most diverse and rich marine environments in the world. These Small islands fringed with sandy beaches are home to the famous Komodo dragon that you may see patrolling the beach or viewing you from a rock.

The coral reefs in the north of the park are rich with colorful combination of hard and soft corals. Be delighted with the schools of anthias, wrasses, majestic angelfish, and also large predators –reef sharks, tunas, and giant trevallies-

Komodo offers a wide range of diving experience: high voltage current dives, gentle drift dives, walls dives along colorful drop offs, monumental boulders, seamounts, pinnacles and sandy slopes. You can also see Manta rays, turtles, and sometime even whale sharks.

Day 1: Arrival at Bima airport by flight from Denpasar at 9 :45. Transfer to the boat, check in, welcome drink, dive equipment set up. Lunch, briefing. Check dive in the Bima strait, an area famous for it’s muck dive, called Bethlehem (an acronyme for Better Than Lembeh). A night dive is offered too. During the night the boat will head to Banta Island, just at the entrance of Komodo National park. (2 dives)

Day 2: 1 morning dive in Banta Island (Tanjung Rusa or GPS point), then the two following dives and a night dive on the west coast of Komodo island. Anchorage in the magnificent bay of  Loh Srikaya. (4 dives)

Day 3: Morning dive on the West of Komodo, before to go further south where we will dive Manta Alley, a famous dive site for it’s Manta cleaning station. The water is cooler in this area and can be as low as 22 °C. 2 dives on Manta alley, and a night dive on the coast. (3 dives.)

Day 4: At dawn we will cross the channel between Komodo and Rinca. First dive in South Rinca is the famous cannibal rock, a great abundance of critters (frog fish, Coleman shrinps and zebra crabs on fire urchins, rare nudibranches, leaf fishes, sea apples), on a reef well covered with soft corals.A phillodesmium in cannibal rock. 2nd dive on Yellow wall, with it’s incredible colors of soft corals, Feather stars, green and yellow tubastrea corals. Afternoon dive and night dive on Torpedo, an interesting muck dive site. Water is generally cold, 22 to 24 °C. We generally can see the Komodos dragons on the beach in this area. (4 dives)

Day 5: We now go North to the Island of Padar where we will do 2 dives,  according to the tide and eventual swell, dives will be 3 sisters (a complexes of 3 pinnacles, rich in critters and fish life), Pilarsteen, No problem, before to cross again the channel and do our 3rd dive in Pantai Merah. A night dive will be offered.  There will be an opportunity for a short walk on the island from the Pantai Merah beach. (4 dives).

Day 6: We are now in the north area, with clear and warm waters.  The dive choice depends here greatly of the tides, as some of them must imperatively be dove at a certain stage of the tide. Sites offered are Batu bolong (a rock with dramatic seascape, huge boulders, and prolific fish life including reef sharks, napoleon wrasses, giant trevallies, etc) , Batu Mandi, Tatawa Besar ( a drift with the best soft corals of the park) , Tatawa kecil, Siaba. (4 Dives)

Day 7: We are now in the most Northern part of the park, and will dive Castel rock, Cristal rock, two highlights action dives of the park, rocks with prolific fish life. The 3rd dive is Caldron, a passage between 2 islands with a beautiful sandy garden coral, soft corals, great fish  life. End of the day ascending a mount to admire the sunset and the magnificience of Komodo mountains. (3 dives)

Day 8: Two dives for this last day,  that we will choose according to current conditions, but most probably you will like to repeat Castel and Cristal rock. In the afternoon, we will go to Rinca for a short trek looking for dragons, buffalos and deers. Small party on board as we go back to Labuanbajo harbour. (2 dives)

Day 9: Chek out in the morning and transfer to Labuanbajo airport.

Remark : Itineraries and  dive sites choice in Komodo are highly dependant on tides and meteorological conditions. Many dives have to be performed at a particular moment of the tide and the South of Komodo may be difficult to acess if the winds are too strong. For these reasons the itineray displayed here is not a fixed itinerary, but more an example of the multiple ways this cruise can be done.

Climate & diving conditions: We cruise in Komodo from June to October, during the South East monsoon which is the dry season in the area. The sunny and dry weather is very pleasant for liveaboard and is often accompanied by some refreshing winds. In the beginning and during most of our journey in Bali and Komodo, we will be protected from the winds and waves, except when we are crossing from Bali to Lombok where the currents can be rather rough. The climate in Komodo from June to September is sunny and dry with some suspended winds from the south east. On board, the evenings can even be a little chilly. In May and October, the winds are calmer with a higher chance of rain.
Best time to dive this destination: You can basically dive here all year round. April to November is considered the dry season when the weather is the best while Vovember to March is the wet season. The absolute best time for visibility would be November to January when you can expect +/- 30m. The period between January and March can have rough sea conditions.
Extensions: Of course as you go through Bali, it is always good to spend a few days there before or after the cruise. Please consult us if you need some advise on where to stay and where to dive. You can also explore NusaTengara for more diving, Alor (highly recommended), Gili islands, etc…
Water temperature: The water temperature is 27 ° C in the north and gets colder towards the south where it can drop to 22 ° C.
