Reiserute

Diving Komodo Islands, IndonesiaKomodo national park is one of the greatest dive destinations, and one of the most diverse and rich marine environments in the world. These Small islands fringed with sandy beaches are home to the famous Komodo dragon that you may see patrolling the beach or viewing you from a rock.

The coral reefs in the north of the park are rich with colorful combination of hard and soft corals. Be delighted with the schools of anthias, wrasses, majestic angelfish, and also large predators –reef sharks, tunas, and giant trevallies-

Komodo offers a wide range of diving experience: high voltage current dives, gentle drift dives, walls dives along colorful drop offs, monumental boulders, seamounts, pinnacles and sandy slopes. You can also see Manta rays, turtles, and sometime even whale sharks.

The cruise will visit and dive the Alor Strait for 4 days, from North to South: the islands of Pantar, Kumba, Ternate, Pura and the Bay of Kalabahi. The very clear and nutrient rich upwelling waters brings in pelagics: sun fish (mola-mola), dogtooth tunas, reef sharks and sometime hammerhead sharks, sailfishes. Whales also frequently pass through the strait. Walls, drop offs, boomies and pinnacles so colorful and so healthy! –one dive site has a bottom literally covered with anemones- ; In Alor critters can be encountered in colorful reef environment and in the black sand bays  of Kalabahi and Biang.

Tide induced currents are strong in the strait, so caution must be taken in choosing the dives sites. In the northern part water temperature is about 26 to 28°C, and in the south it can drop to 22°C, around Pura island and in Biang Bay. We will explore some rarely dived  areas around the island of Twereg, and in the South of Alor and Pantar. We will visit a village where we will see traditional dances. In the bay of Biang, we will go ashore for a short trek on the slopes of the Sirung volcano.  The second part of the cruise we will focus on the Komodo National Park. From Labuanabajo to Bima, 5 days in the North, 2 days in the South.

Remark : Itineraries and  dive sites choice in Komodo are highly dependant on tides and meteorological conditions. Many dives have to be performed at a particular moment of the tide and the South of Komodo may be difficult to acess if the winds are too strong. For these reasons the itineray displayed here is not a fixed itinerary, but more an example of the multiple ways this cruise can be done.

Climate & diving conditions: We cruise in Komodo from June to October, during the South East monsoon which is the dry season in the area. The sunny and dry weather is very pleasant for liveaboard and is often accompanied by some refreshing winds. In the beginning and during most of our journey in Bali and Komodo, we will be protected from the winds and waves, except when we are crossing from Bali to Lombok where the currents can be rather rough. The climate in Komodo from June to September is sunny and dry with some suspended winds from the south east. On board, the evenings can even be a little chilly. In May and October, the winds are calmer with a higher chance of rain.
Best time to dive this destination: You can basically dive here all year round. April to November is considered the dry season when the weather is the best while Vovember to March is the wet season. The absolute best time for visibility would be November to January when you can expect +/- 30m. The period between January and March can have rough sea conditions.
Extensions: Of course as you go through Bali, it is always good to spend a few days there before or after the cruise. Please consult us if you need some advise on where to stay and where to dive. You can also explore NusaTengara for more diving, Alor (highly recommended), Gili islands, etc…
Water temperature: The water temperature is 27 ° C in the north and gets colder towards the south where it can drop to 22 ° C.
